Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja sp.) Type: Perennial. Where to Grow it: All regions. Bloom time and height: Spring 1-2 ft. tall. Sun/Shade: Full sun, partial shade. How to Grow it: Best in late Fall. The seeds are very small and should be sown directly on the soil surface to 1/16" depth. Keep soil moist. Adapted to well drained areas in full sun. Not the easiest variety to cultivate, but the lure of such magnificent flowers certainly compensates for the effort. Does not transplant well. Requires a period of time to become established. Etc: The Blue Ridge landscape is set afire with the brilliant red-orange hue of this classic perennial. Its vivid upright petals appear to have been dipped in paint, hence the name, "Paintbrush".
